Summer in southeastern Massachusetts kicks off with the 350th anniversary celebration of the incorporation of Dartmouth. Apponagansett Park in Dartmouth is the place to be on June 8th for the festivities. Watch the Dartmouth Middle School Drama Club reenact the land sale and incorporation, see the winner of the Brothers of the Brush Contest, and enjoy a bite of the 350th Birthday cake.
Racing enthusiasts plan a visit to Seekonk with the entire family. The Seekonk Grand Prix makes young ones of all ages happy with go-carts, mini golf, and games. "The Action Track of the East," Seekonk Speedway, is home to Saturday Night Racing and the Seekonk Street Stocks. Get in on the 2014 excitement with Sim’s Spring Kick Off Classic on Sunday, May 4th, and the Memorial Day Thrill Show on May 25th.
Pittsfield, near the far western Massachusetts state line, is a gateway to the Berkshires. Spring travelers glimpse steam rising from the sugar houses as fresh maple sap is transformed into pure maple syrup. The Ioka Valley Farm makes a great destination to learn the maple sugaring process in person. Watch and ask questions as the sugarmaker oversees the boilers. Visit the nearby Calf-A for a pancake breakfast featuring the fresh maple syrup. Sugaring season runs through mid April.
Plymouth, on the Massachusetts Atlantic coast, is America’s Hometown. Travelers see where Pilgrims actually lived on a visit to the Jabez Howland House, and the First Parish Church is the oldest continuous church in New England. A visit to Pilgrim Memorial State Park is a must to see Plymouth Rock and the site where the Mayflower passengers first set foot in New England.
For runners, the Commonweathh of Massachusetts' spring calendar includes a variety of challenges and events. Near Pittsfield in far western Massachusetts, the 2014 Berkshire Highlands Pentathlon is April 5th featuring five events. Athletes compete in a trail run, road biking, kayaking, a Bone Frog obstacle run, and a hill climb with downhill ski finishes the challenges.
In Plympton, 10 miles inland from Plymouth, spring 2014 brings the 27th annual Strawberry Shortcake 10K. Held May 10th at the Upland Sportsman’s Club, shortcake events also include a two-mile fun run and 10K walk. The 2014 Old Sandwich Road Race is June 1st, featuring the half marathon down Old Sandwich Road, ending at South Plymouth High School.
