Classic New England – Massachusetts - from the weathered clapboard of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, to historic Plymouth and through the streets of Boston - Captivating, cosmopolitan and historic, it’s all Massachusetts.
Western Massachusetts offers pristine outdoors in the Berkshires, fabulous fall foliage along the Mohawk Trail and the delightful city of Springfield. Worchester, the state's second largest city is in the heart of Massachusetts amidst sites like Old Sturbridge Village and adventures along the Johnny Appleseed Trails. Greater Boston anchors the state with its urban and cosmopolitan offerings, but a hike along the city’s freedom trail is a must-do. See it all in Massachusetts.
The Berkshires anchor western Massachusetts with historic towns like Pittsfield offering visitors summer outdoor fun, heritage sites and cultural events. Travel across Massachusetts and enjoy summer outdoor activities, events and historic destinations. Plymouth on the west coast of Massachusetts blends America’s past with the present. Races at the Seekonk Speedway, America’s longest running family operated track, are a summer tradition. Catch the nostalgia of a bygone era at the New Bedford Whaling Museum east of Dartmouth. Of course a visit to Boston is a must for Massachusetts travelers – walk historic pathways through the city, and enjoy world-class food, shopping and events.
Western Massachusetts and the Berkshires are well known for summer entertainment and 2012 is no exception. The Berkshire Theatre Group fills the summer calendar with events; including a full schedule of performances at Pittsfield's beautifully restored Colonial Theater. Dark Star Orchestra kicks off the summer season May 22nd followed by June’s concert by Raekwon on the 13th, and the Chinese Golden Dragon Acrobats on the 16th. Among the summer’s events, Christopher O’Riley performs, with the musical Oliver! closing the summer calendar September 7th through 9th.
The Seekonk Speedway, called the Action Track of the East, is a summer tradition for southern Massachusetts. The 2012 season for Seekonk Speedway runs May to October, with multiple events weekly. North Dartmouth, west of New Bedford and home of University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, is just north of Horseneck Beach State Reservation. An ideal spot to enjoy summer, Horseneck Beach features a popular 2-mile beach with consistent breezes. Horseneck is a great place for windsurfing, cooling off on a hot day, and birding. Check the birds out behind the dunes by Gooseberry Neck, near the eastern end of the reservation.
East of North Dartmouth, New Bedford is home to the New Bedford Whaling Museum and Whaling National Historic Park. One of the world’s premier 19th century whaling ports, the Whaling Museum preserves and showcases the areas heritage. Visit July 6th through 8th, 2012, as the Whaling National Historical Park hosts the Greater New Bedford Summerfest. Summerfest features a fourth of July weekend full of Folk Music and Arts.
